One, in particular, has you playing as a double agent which requires you to trigger events and complete a variety of objectives. In fact, some missions will feel like a completely different game. Some may be traditional shoot anything that moves, while others add a more stealthy approach. The campaign does a great job at mixing up the gameplay style for each location. The team’s goal is to hunt down “pursues” who have obtained nukes and plans to unleash them on all of Europe. There are also a few new faces that fill out your team along with the team lead CIA agent Adler. If you are a returning Black Ops player, then you will be familiar with some of your teammates such as Woods Mason and Hudson. The story takes place in the 1980s during the Cold War and is loosely based on recently declassified documents discussing various events that may or may not have taken place during this time. I found this to be a helpful feature, especially when playing on some of the more challenging difficulties. Keep in mind that once you have chosen your traits they cannot be changed. If you have no interest in these bonuses, you can just select “Classified” and no bonuses will apply. Each trait has its own set of bonuses such as “Paranoid” which increases your aiming speed by 100% or “Violent Tendencies” which increases bullet damage by 25%. You are given the ability to fully customize your name, skin tone, ethnicity, and gender (male, female or non-binary) along with the back story for which agency you work for and apply 2 out of 15 Psychological character traits.

It’s for this reason that I decided to break up my review into four parts to cover each mode individually. Besides Multiplayer and Zombies modes, we also have the return of the Black Ops campaign and the inclusion of Modern Warfare’s Warzone.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is definitely a mouthful and fitting for this year’s offering which is packed to the brim with content.
